Research help

As students in the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University, you have access to many of the same CMU library resources and services as students at the Pittsburgh campus.

Even though you are located in Australia, CMU librarians in Pittsburgh are available to assist you too. The two best ways for you to get in contact with a CMU librarian are through email and through "Live Help" chat service.

For further information, see: Ask a Librarian.

Article databases

You can access all of the databases to which CMU Libraries subscribe.

Some of the most frequently used databases include:

To access other databases, go to Databases by Name, A-Z

What do I do if the full-text of the article I need is not available in the database I am searching?

If the full-text format of a journal article is not available through the database you are searching and there is an SFX icon displayed within the article record, click on it. This will generate an automatic search for the journal in the library catalog, CAMEO.

Sometimes SFX finds the full-text article through another database, and you simply need to click on the link it provides and then the text of the article is displayed in a new browser window.

If CMU Libraries own the print version of the journal, it will be displayed in CAMEO. If the hard copy of the journal article you need is available at CMU, or if it is not owned by CMU, you can submit an interlibrary loan request for the article through Illiad. For further information about submitting requests, refer to this quick guide.

While articles will be sent to you electronically, please plan for at least one week for requesting, processing, and receiving articles.

Is there a list somewhere of which journals are available electronically?

The collection of journals that can be accessed online is large, some frequently used e-journals include:

Refer to the A-Z journal list for other journal titles.

What about online books and other electronically available material?

CMU subscribes to many online reference books; there are a variety of other materials available electronically too.

What do I do if I want to search article databases from home?

You can search the article databases, electronic books, and other online sources by logging into the campus Web-VPN service.

Interlibrary loan guide for students in the Heinz School

Requesting journal articles through ILLiad

If after verifying through SFX and Cameo that a journal article is not available online through any of the subscription databases, you can request an electronic copy of the journal article through the ILLiad interlibrary loan service.

When setting up your ILLiad account, select "send to address" as the method of delivery. The comment "Prefer electronic delivery" should be checked "Yes." For the "Delivery location" option, select "Offsite locations." Select a login and password that you can easily remember, but that others will not be able to guess.

How will journal articles arrive? When will they arrive?

You will receive an email message once the journal article is ready for you. In most instances, there will be a link provided for you to download the article or the article will be an attachment you can download. On rare occasions, however, you may receive an email that the article you requested will be mailed to you via UPS. Pleae allow 7-10 days for article processing, even though many times you will receive your article request sooner than this.

How can I request books through interlibrary loan?

Presently, there is no established service for borrowing books through the CMU Libraries in Pittsburgh. Consult with one of the Heinz School - Australia academic advisors or professors for recommendations regarding borrowing books locally.
