Visiting Faculty - Dr. Terry Buss

Terry BussVisiting Faculty Member Dr. Terry Buss has a distinguished academic career in the field of public policy and a wealth of experience in directing government projects in other countries. 

The former Director of International Studies at the National Academy of Public Administration Dr Buss is visiting Heinz-Australia to lecture in Organisational Planning and Strategic Planning to both Adelaide based MSIT and MSPPM students.

Dr. Buss’s practical experience in high level public policy strategy development and planning and has seen the successful direction of government projects in the U.S., Columbia, Hungary, Russia, Georgia, Ghana and, most recently Iraq, and includes:

• Establishing and managing a new Office of Policy to advise the US Community Planning and Development Assistant Secretary on community and economic development projects and affordable housing (2000-2001).

• Advising the Vice President of the World Bank Institute in Washington, DC (1999-2000); providing training and technical assistance; and serving as the secretariat for the development of the World Bank’s $70 million Global Distance Learning Network (GDLN).

• Directing the US Information Agency technical assistance program in Hungary for three years (1992-1995) immediately following the fall of communism in Eastern Europe; and replicating this program in Russia from (1993 –1996).

Dr. Buss earned his doctorate in political science and mathematics at Ohio State University.
He has held a number of senior academic posts including Dean of the School of Policy and Management at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami (2001– 2003); Chair at the Department of Public Management in the Sawyer School of Business at Suffolk University in Boston (1997 to 2000); Director of the PhD program at and Chair of the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies at the University of Akron in Ohio (1987 to 1997) and
Director and Associate Professor at the Center for Urban Studies and Public Service Institute (an organization he developed) at Youngstown State University (YSU) in Ohio (1977-87).

Dr. Buss also has an extensive publication record, including 12 books and nearly 300 professional articles on a variety of policy issues. He has won numerous awards for research and public service – and has twice been a Fulbright Scholar.
