Telstra Scholarship vauled at $90,000

When Jose Rivas Mauleon decided to enrol in CMU-Heinz Australia he was working as a Business Analyst in Australia. He was working on a project to build a business case for implementing Enterprise Architecture for the jewellery manufacturer Peter W.  Beck.

Jose Rivas“I applied to Carnegie Mellon because I had received excellent reports of this university from friends who had graduated from Carnegie Mellon Pittsburgh.  As graduates their career opportunities increased.  One of them is now the General Manager of an important corporation in Peru.”

Having decided where he wanted to study, Jose enquired about the scholarship opportunities available to him.  Admissions staff suggested that his experience made him an ideal candidate for the Telstra Scholarship. The Telstra Media Communications and Technology Scholarship Program supports post-graduate students in completing their Masters of Science in Information Technology at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz School of Public Policy and Management’s campus in Adelaide with each scholarship valued at $90,000.

Asked about Adelaide being an ideal place to bring his family, Jose agreed and said, “Well, South Australia is known as the University State, and it is a very good place for studying.  Adelaide is a big modern city, but not too big, which means that time isn’t wasted on public transport travelling to and from the campus, which happens in larger cities.  Everywhere that I need to go is no more than 20 minutes from the city centre.  There are many cafés where you can stop and study for a while.  Adelaide is an excellent place for students.  Probably for me the most challenging thing is to balance time for family and studies.  I would say that Adelaide helps in that sense.”

“In the future, I would like a position in Senior Management, still involved in Information Technology but not only Information Technology.  I want to expand to other management areas like Finance, Operations, logistics, etc.  The good thing about Carnegie Mellon is that I can take management courses related to other areas like Financial Management, Cost Benefit Analysis, Organizational Managements, etc.  Those courses are extremely useful for my future aspirations and for the aspirations of any IT Professional.”

Asked about his first impressions for the Carnegie Mellon campus in Australia, Jose said, “I am still in my first month of study as a full-time student, so it takes some time to get used to the workload and to the many commitments you have as a member of the Carnegie Mellon community.  It is very challenging.  The expectations are high and you have to respond to them.  The good thing is that after this learning process you will be a better professional and even more a professional with great opportunities.”
