Classes from 10,000 km Away!
Students at Carnegie Mellon Australia campus are given the opportunity to attend “live” video conference classes in Adelaide from faculty based in Pittsburgh U.S.
In this example - Professor Kristen Kurland (along with teaching assistant Maria Coe) is offering her very popular distance Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to students at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy & Management in Adelaide, commencing this August semester.
There will be more about video conferencing in future newsletters.
Professor Kurland is also scheduled to visit the Adelaide campus at the beginning of the semester to answer questions and help student kick start their course.

Kristen Kurland, CMU Teaching Professor and expert on spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has been teaching GIS for over 16 years and has been teaching distance courses at CMU for over 10 years. In 2005 she was the recipient of the Heinz School's Martcia Wade award for teaching excellence. Kurland's research focusses on interdisciplinary collaborations in urban design, community participation and decision-making, health and the built environment, and spatial analysis using geographic information systems (GIS.) Kristen is also the co-author of ESRI's best selling Gistutorial and Gistutorial for Health workbooks used by universities worldwide. Her courses consistently fill quickly and have long waitlists.
Maria Coe graduated from the Heinz School (Pittsburgh) in May 2008, with a Masters in Public Policy and Management. While at Heinz, she was the Distance Learning Coordinator of the Masters of Medical Management program, working with professors, staff, and students to implement three distance courses. She was also the teaching assistant for the Project Management course. Her professional background and interests are in public finance, economic analysis, tax policy, and using GIS to analyse economic trends. Prior to attending Heinz, Maria was Senior Economist to the Governor of Colorado and is currently a consultant with The Public Financial Management Group, specializing in public finance and debt management.
