With a strong technical background in IT, David Phiri worked as an IT Engineer in Zambia before applying to Carnegie Mellon H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy & Management in Australia. Keen to keep abreast with the changing focus in his workplace which was directed towards the management of IT resources and recognising that most of the IT technical work was routinely outsourced to other companies, David saw the need to gain the expertise and skills that would enable him to successfully augment his technical background with IT Management.

‘I was particularly impressed and drawn to studying in Adelaide when I discovered that the MSIT course was ranked as the best in the US.’ David was excited also by the prospect of studying in Adelaide, which provided him with the opportunity of meeting and working with other international students.

The course offered at Carnegie Mellon’s Australia campus is directed towards people with a high level of technical competence who want to gain the same degree of expertise in management. The syllabus is a well balanced combination of technical and business strategic courses which can be combined according to each student’s interests.  The core courses cover all the major aspects of IT management and expose students to a wide range of issues that occur in the IT industry.  David Phiri was awarded his Master of Science in Information Technology from Carnegie Mellon University Adelaide in 2007.

‘After my time at Carnegie Mellon I clearly understand why it is highly reputed worldwide in the field of IT Management.  The course covers state-of-the-art IT business models and cutting edge technologies and techniques.  Carnegie Mellon’s education has changed a lot in my life and how I perceive the role of IT in an organisation.  It has given me the capability to strategically plan how to align IT capabilities with business objectives and how to manage an IT start up business. I would not hesitate to recommend Carnegie Mellon to anyone considering doing an IT Management course’, David Phiri, Zambia MSIT 2007.

Since returning to Zambia David has become a Senior Software Engineer in Business Applications and Software Development.
