Executive Director’s Welcome
Dear Visitor,
I take great pleasure in welcoming you to Carnegie Mellon University Australia. Our university motto is “My heart is in the work” taken from our founder, Andrew Carnegie.
I cannot think of a more fitting way to describe the difference between Carnegie Mellon University and other universities. As a faculty member, and now Executive Director of the university’s campus in Australia, I am uniquely positioned to personally attest to the relentless pursuit of the highest standards of education that we provide our graduates.
I invite you to review Our Mission and Our Vision statements, which will enhance your understanding of ‘The Carnegie Mellon Advantage’—whether you study at our US campus in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, or with us here, at our campus in Adelaide, Australia.
In Australia, qualified students may select from two postgraduate degree programs:
- Master of Science in Information Technology Management (ranked #1 by U.S. News & World Report)
- Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (ranked #4 by U.S. News & World Report).
(View Carnegie Mellon’s global ranking profile.)
In 2006, Carnegie Mellon University became the first international university (and only one of two) to be accredited by the Australian Commonwealth Government to offer internationally recognised degrees in Australia. Importantly, the degrees earned in Australia are identical to those awarded in our campus in Pittsburgh—having the same entrance requirements, curriculum and courses, and faculty—and needless to say, the same world-class reputation.
We believe this is the core reason why our graduates enjoy a strong competitive advantage.
What Does ‘The Carnegie Mellon Advantage’ mean to our students?
- We are a truly global university. In Adelaide, our students come from more than 25 countries throughout the Asia-Pacific, the United States, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. You’ll also find our faculty and staff are as culturally diverse as our students. This tangible difference means our students can immediately benefit from wide-reaching networks of contemporaries and global experts—in a safe and welcoming environment.
- We boast one of the most highly qualified faculties in the world, most having extensive careers not only in teaching, but also in basic and applied research and organisational management. We accomplish this with a core faculty onsite, and through video conferencing and faculty rotation from our Pittsburgh and Washington, DC, campuses to Adelaide. We do not offer web-based courses.
- As our demanding degree programs are of the highest calibre, our competent graduates realise their full potential as confident managers and not simply highly competitive technicians.
- With a careful eye on student to faculty ratios, students receive personal attention from our experts. Our program size allows us to know each student personally, and our program’s flexibility allows us to cater to their individual needs and personal requirements, whether attending on a full-time or part-time basis.
- We empower students to customise their degrees by choosing from a wide variety of course electives offered in a range of formats—encouraging students to add multiple skills to their already potent qualifications.
- Because our focus is on quality, we keep our admission standards high—retaining the integrity that comes with earning a degree from Carnegie Mellon University.
- Finally, when you combine our high standards of admission with our highly competitive degrees, it is easy to understand why our graduates become sought-after individuals offering unique, immediate and measurable benefits to future employers.
I believe the ‘The Carnegie Mellon Advantage’ is what makes our graduates , confident and competitive.
By design, our innovative course curriculum provides a firm foundation in theory, with a focus on practical skills that will advance management practice, policy and decision-making.
Our fusion of curriculum and our programs’ required research conducted with non-profits, private companies and government agencies, allows extensive hands-on learning whilst yielding measurable benefits for our community and corporate partners.
Whether you earn your degree at Carnegie Mellon, select one of our graduates for an internship program or hire one of our graduates for permanent placement—you are sure to experience ‘The Carnegie Mellon Advantage’. Contact us today.
Sincere regards,
TERRY F. BUSS, PhD
